Leatherwork shaped by the architecture, the material and the hand.
Ed Tanner designs and makes bespoke leather handrails and architectural leatherwork. From our Primrose Hill workshop, we work with architects, interior designers and private clients on commissions for homes, hotels, yachts and public buildings.
Inside the practiceLeather introduces warmth, texture and a point of contact within an interior. Its grain, colour, flexibility and finish all influence how a detail is made and how it develops through use.

Hides are selected and patterns developed around the shape, scale and setting of each piece.

Traditional leatherworking skills are adapted to curved rails, architectural surfaces and individual objects.

The surface, seam and finish are considered together, with attention to how the piece will be held and used.
Drawings, photographs and material references help us understand the geometry, the intended use and the relationship between leather and the surrounding finishes.
We work with the project team to resolve the construction. Samples establish the leather, colour and wrapping style before the finished piece is made.
Work can be prepared in the workshop or fitted on site, depending on the rail, access and programme. We undertake commissions in the UK and internationally.
Ed Tanner’s approach grew through Simon Harcourt’s work under Harcourt London and Harcourt Design: collaborations with architects, interior designers and specialist makers, bringing leather into the fabric of interiors.
Simon brings almost 30 years of working with leather to the practice, spanning crafted objects, architectural wall surfaces and leather handrails. The studio continues to combine material knowledge with careful fabrication, making pieces that are specific to the project.
